My Apps & Games Redesign
Led the end-to-end redesign of the 'My Apps & Games' area (350M weekly visitors), one of the most trafficked surfaces in the Play Store.
Strategy & Vision: Defined the UX vision by synthesizing extensive user research, competitive analysis, and data to create customer-focused design solutions.
Leadership & Influence: Drove alignment across multiple product and engineering teams by communicating proposals succinctly, negotiating priorities, and securing leadership buy-in.
Scalable Execution: Collaborated with engineering team to define a scalable system architecture, delivering a solution that could evolve while navigating complex policy and marketing constraints.
Problem space definition
Upon leading the app assistance and distribution UX team, I identified critical user pain points, particularly in emerging markets.
Users with low-storage devices were forced to uninstall apps daily just to perform basic functions, like switching between streaming services. This frustrating cycle led them to skip vital security updates, leaving their devices vulnerable to malware.
I identified that the existing, fragmented app management system was compounding the problem; our attempts to add features were only increasing architectural complexity and degrading the user experience.
Recognizing that incremental fixes were insufficient, I championed a complete, foundational redesign of the entire area.
The process
Spearheaded multi-market user research and stakeholder interviews across 3 markets to define product strategy and validate core assumptions.
Overhauled the information architecture, drastically simplifying user flows and introducing powerful bulk actions that streamlined app management.
Designed a flexible and scalable system that enabled seamless integration of future features and aligned with an upcoming brand refresh.
Validated design solutions through multiple rounds of usability testing, and collaborated with Visual Designers to commission animations that increased user engagement and delight.
Design solution
My solution was an intuitive and scalable two-tab design that simplified the entire experience:
Overview tab for at-a-glance status and key shortcuts.
Manage tab that centralized all app controls—like sorting, filtering, and bulk actions—into a single location.
Clear and delightful app update. With an introduction of quick update status preview we allowed users to quickly understand the state of their device, prioritize certain updates and troubleshoot issue. The additional introduction of animations and illustration added to users delight.
We also provided for a simple storage management directly from the Play Store, saving users many clicks.
New manage tab supports multiple bulk actions, and includes additional app info.
I led redesign from inception to execution, providing team with detailed specs.
Measured impact
As a result of redesign we have seen an incredible impact:
Users are objectively happier with the new page ( user complaints went down 50%)
The page loads faster & less jank (<.5s +53%, <1s +56%, <2s +49%)
Users are getting more out Play’s Storage management features ( number of users with insufficient storage dropped by 29%)
Other app management features are benefiting from increased visibility ( Peer-to-Peer sharing increased by 212%, Play Protect increased by 120%)
The page's update rate and app freshness were sustained, which was the original goal of the optimization.
